ECOSOPHICAL SKIN

2011
ACADEMIC: COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY GSAPP
RSEARCH PROJECT
LOCATION:MANHATTAN NY
STATUS: 2ND PLACE THINK SPACE ECOLOGICAL BORDERS  COMPETITION

An experiment in social ecology tries to re-interrogate the notion of nature and its relationship with human kind. The proposal sets up a neighborhood protocol in which the relationship between different species, including humans co-exists. The architecture acts as a mechanism of conflict between the different species. A “wild skin” is applied to a residential building in Manhattan and its inhabitants are able to personalize their interaction with the wild skin. Differentiating itself from previous sustainable approaches, this project does not treat the organic façade and the interior of the building as two separate environments. The scenario calls for an engagement between exterior forces of nature and the interior, creating tension between the species forcing them to ADAPT. The Ecosophical skin literally acts as an ecological border able to mutate itself.
